Task 7: In search for my own understanding of interactivity

Some of you pointed out the year of the first article as being rather old and some even claimed to be sad because of that. No need to be :). Sometimes a bit older papers have their value. Without knowing the aspects of history one wouldn’t be able to understand of what may happen in the future.

You have studied two articles about the concept of interactivity, which were published in 1998 and 2002, approximately 10 years ago. Kristo in one of his previous posts rightfully asks the question: Has ‘interactivity’ gotten a new meaning since? Reimo claims that “the focus on interactivity as a process in different fields now is indeed different than the article [1998] suggests. The aspects and views provided are correct but they have altered and changed over time quite a lot.”

For the next task we would like you to look back at the concept of interactivity presented in these two articles and ponder whether the concept has gotten a new meaning 10 years later? How and in what ways the concept has changed, if at all, from your point of view? Is there something in these articles you find useful and valid nowadays? These are just some guiding questions. Finding more recent articles, Weblog posts, etc. to base your thoughts on is strongly recommended.

The task should be presented as a free-form short essay reflecting on your personal understanding of interactivity, your synthesis of the studied material and your perception of interactivity today.

The deadline for task 7 is: Sunday, November 7th, 24:00 (Estonian time).

Give credit where credit is due, I like this task and the deadline is very reasonable, thanks!

Just a heads up though, maybe it might be better next year to have the students read these papers and then formulate their opinion based on them right away, instead of writing those summaries. It was very, very difficult to write summaries of what were, essentially, summaries themselves (both papers focused largely on summarizing what was already written before). Had I known that this task of our own opinions was coming up, I had not injected so many thoughts of my own in the previous tasks.

Anyways, cheers and have a good day 🙂
